The Mercedes S Class car are called Roadsters. What is a Roadster?

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008

In the 1800’s light carriage or “buggy” was also referred to as a Roadster.
Roadster is a 2-seater lightweight car without a permanent top so that the driver and passenger remain somewhat exposed to the elements.
.
This applies to both soft top convertibles and retractable hardtops (which Mercedes offers)

A retractable hardtop is a type of convertible that does not use a folding textile roof but instead utilizes an automatically operated, multi-part, self-storing rigid roof where the sections are either opaque, translucent or independently operable.

Retractable hardtops are made from either steel, plastic or aluminum. They have two to five rigid sections and rely on dual-hinged trunk lids that enable the trunk lid to both take in the retracting top from the front and also store items from the rear.

In England a roadster is called a spyder derived from a term riginating in Italy. A Spider was a fast, very agile two-wheeled chariot used by the Roman army. It was commonly towed by several horses.

The English spelled it with a “y” instead of an “i” to avoid association with the eight legged variety.

The Merceds S Class is comprised of these sub classes.

  • SLR-Class
  • SLK-Class
  • SL-Class

Can you tell me about the different “Classes” that Mercedes names their car models?

Monday, July 14th, 2008

That’s a great question. When driving around, you may have noticed the model names on the back of various Mercedes-Benz automobiles – for instance E550 or CL 550. The letters at the front of those models tell you the “Class.”

Mercedes divides its 45 different models into 14 separate classes based on body style – here they are

  • C-Class, CL-Class, CLK-Class , CLS-Class,
  • E-Class,
  • G-Class, GL-Class,
  • M-Class (ML),
  • R-Class,
  • S-Class , SL-Class, SLK-Class, SLR-Class.
